Transportation & Automotive — The Fastest Growing Sector

How to Choose the Right Grade for Your Order

- Consider the temper: O (soft) for deep drawing, Hxx (strain-hardened) for formed parts, T6 for maximum strength in 6xxx series.
- Check standards: Make sure your supplier can certify to the standard your market requires — ASTM B209 for US, EN 485 for Europe, JIS H4000 for Japan, GB/T 3880 for China.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can 6061 be used in marine environments?
6061 has moderate corrosion resistance and can be used in freshwater or coastal environments if properly protected (painted or anodized). But for direct seawater contact, 5083 or 5052 are better choices. 6061 is more prone to pitting corrosion in saltwater long-term.
What is the difference between T5 and T6 temper?
T5 is cooled from an elevated temperature and then artificially aged. T6 is solution heat-treated (heated to a higher temperature) and then artificially aged. T6 produces higher strength — for 6061, T6 reaches 310 MPa tensile vs T5 at about 260 MPa. T5 is cheaper to produce and commonly used for 6063 extrusions where the strength difference doesn't matter.
Which aluminum alloy is best for welding?
5xxx series alloys (5052, 5083) are the most weldable aluminum alloys. They don't lose strength in the heat-affected zone the way 6xxx alloys do. For welded structures requiring strength, 5083 plate is the standard choice. 6061 can be welded but needs post-weld heat treatment to restore full strength. Never weld 2xxx or 7xxx series alloys — they're prone to cracking.
